'Audaces': Voicing Every Character in a Series About Women Who Changed History

Recording the voices of all the characters across 30 animated episodes of a series that celebrates women who changed history?? YES. 'Audaces' is the adaptation of the acclaimed, award-winning French comic 'Culottées' ('Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World') by Pénélope Bagieu, brought to Latin American audiences through Pakapaka.

It was fascinating to get to know the lives of these thirty talented, brave women of different ages, interests and cultures who, with audacity and determination, broke through prejudice and barriers — Annette Kellerman, inventor of the women's swimsuit; Leymah Gbowee, peace activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner; Wu Zetian, the first Empress of China; and so many more.

As an actress, the challenge was beautiful and enormous: giving each woman her own personality without hiding behind vocal tricks. Because the deepest lesson of this project is exactly that — identity matters more than voice. Each of them had to sound like herself, not like a character I was putting on. A call for all of us to embrace what makes us singular.

Technically, a one-actress series is also an exercise in vocal architecture: I map each woman's pitch, rhythm and breath before recording, so that when two of them meet in the same scene, the listener never doubts who is speaking. The narrator holds the thread; the characters carry the color. Documentary animation asks for truth above all — these were real women, and their voices deserved to be treated as testimony, not caricature.
