The Spanish Voice of Barbie: 12 Seasons of Dreamhouse Adventures
The Spanish voice of Barbie for mobile apps! For years now I have had the joy of giving Barbie her voice in Spanish — childhood dreams coming true (and how I love Malibu!). With Barbie Dreamhouse we are past season 12, so Barbie and I have been through absolutely everything together.
The craft behind an iconic character voice
When I record mobile apps — especially in character voice — three things matter above everything. First, sustaining the character to the very last line: session after session, year after year, Barbie has to sound exactly like Barbie, because kids notice instantly when their friend's voice changes. Second, hitting the right words: in interactive content, the emphasis guides little players through the game, so every highlighted word is a small signpost. And third — just as technical as the other two — having fun. Kids can hear a smile. All of that is poured into every session.
Interactive apps are also a very particular recording discipline: hundreds of short lines, menus, reactions and celebrations that must sound alive out of any order, because the player decides the sequence. It is character acting built like a mosaic — each little piece has to carry the whole personality.
Barbie joins the family of interactive characters I have voiced for kids' apps — from Strawberry Shortcake to My Little Pony and Smurfette — a corner of my work that mixes video game voice acting with kids' character voices, my two favorite playgrounds.
