Voicing Lina: the Animated Series That Teaches Kids to Care for the Planet

Being the voice of Lina is one of those projects that fill the heart. 'Lina y los amigos del arcoíris' is an animated series co-produced by Greenpeace and Escuela Plus (DIRECTV): Lina is a nine-year-old girl who sails the seas with her grandfather Günther, protecting ecosystems and endangered species, episode after episode.

What moves me most is the mission: raising environmental awareness through animation. Kids don't get a lecture — they get an adventure. And in the middle of the adventure, almost without noticing, they learn that the planet is our home and that taking care of it is everyone's job, at every age.

Behind Lina there is a team full of love and dedication: the series' director and producers, scriptwriter Luciano Saracino, my dear colleague Leto Dugatkin as Mr. Thorn, and everyone at Escuela Plus who brings the series to schools and families across Latin America. Characters like Lina remind me why I love giving voice to kids' content: because a voice can plant an idea, and an idea planted in childhood can change how a whole generation looks at the world.

Voicing a nine-year-old protagonist as an adult actress is one of the loveliest challenges in animation voice over: a real child's energy, curiosity and courage, without ever sounding like an imitation. And because Lina travels across all of Latin America, the series is recorded in Neutral Spanish — so a kid in Bogotá, Santiago or Buenos Aires hears her as one of their own. Educational animation only works when the character feels true; that is where the acting carries the message.
